Addison Klonowski earns Medalist Honors top seed at 95th WWGA Junior

Frankfort, Ill., June 22, 2022 — Addison Klonowski, 17, from Naples, Fla. grabbed the Medalist honors in the 95th WWGA Junior Championship at Prestwick Country Club. Her two-day total of three-over par 74-73-147 put her one stroke ahead of Chloe Tarkany of Scottsdale, Ariz. Klonowski has been playing in the Junior since she was 13 (2018), won the 2021 Marion Miley Bracelet for carding the lowest scores in the WWGA Junior and Amateur, and won the 2022 South Florida PGA Championship.

Klonowski said, “The first couple holes I was just trying to get in a groove. My irons were not going to plan at first. My putts were being left short, so I was getting frustrated. I was trying to get a good mental state. During the back nine, the putts were starting to fall. It was a good round; I was happy with it.”

Playing with Klonowski with a 73-76-149 was Jessica Mason from Westminster, Colo. She stated, “Today was not as good as yesterday. My irons were kind of off and on. I had some bad ones and some good ones. The greens today were a lot slower than yesterday, so I was trying to get used to them and keeping putts short.”

Rounding out the group was Maria Jose (M.J.) Barragan of Morelia, Mexico. She finished with a 6-over par 74-76-150.

“It wasn’t a good round,” said Barragan. “But I just stayed calm and made pars at the back nine because the first nine I just had a very bad round. I think that this game is not until the 18th hole.”

One other player finished with a 77-73-150, Samantha Brown, Westfield, Ind.; Three players carded 151: Amelie Phung, Forest Hills, N.Y.; Brynn Kort, Henderson, Nev., and Kate Tilma, Wichita, Kan. Three players finished with a score of 152 including: Lisa Copeland, Naperville, Ill; Sayers Allen, Spring Branch, Tex., and Lauren Pham, Las Vegas, Nev.

Pham stated, “It was tough out there. I was one-over on the front and then on the back nine I kind of got on a bogey train, so I was really grinding it out. Overall, I think the conditions were better today, I was just making a few mental mistakes. The ball wasn’t really going where I wanted it to go, but overall, I kind of just battled it out and was able to finish five-over.”

Shooting even-par 72 today after an 80 in the first round, 14-year-old Copeland said, “I was putting myself in better positions. I started out on fire. Holes two and three, I stiffed them both to five feet and so that gave me some confidence. Then my putting and also my speed was much better.”

Belmont University-bound Tarkany shot a four-over par 77-71-148. She stated, “I played pretty well, finished with a couple bogeys, but it was a good round so all in all I feel happy with how I played. The weather was completely different today than yesterday, but it got a little bit windy at the end of the round.” Tarkany was the only player to shoot under par yesterday or today.

A play-off among six players was needed for the final three spots in the “Sweet 16.”

They included: Estelle Seon, Carrollton, Tex.; Kate Brody, Grand Blanc, Mich.; Vilda Westh Blanc, Sweden; Bonnie Zhai, Surrey, B.C. Canada; Riley Lewis, Edwardsville, Ill. and Audrey Rischer, Columbia, Mo.

The six players played holes 10, 17 and 18 in sudden death. Zhai was eliminated after the first hole while Westh Blanc and Rischer secured their spots. Brody, Seon and Lewis proceeded to hole 17 where Seon was eliminated. Brody then claimed the final spot on hole 18 to send Lewis home.

Match play begins tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. with the 16 players who qualified.
